Writing

Whether writing nonfiction or text for toddlers, I ensure clarity and age-appropriate language. I love writing in engaging ways to make factual content feel exciting and easy to understand. I also enjoy creating bouncy, rhyming texts for the very youngest readers. Scansion is a particular strength – I have a sharp ear for rhythm and flow.

Editorial services for publishers

Copyediting

I offer clear, thoughtful copyediting that sharpens structure, clarity and style – all while preserving the author’s voice. I work to brief and style guides, with edits supplied via Word track changes or directly in InDesign.

Proofreading

I hold a PQB proofreading qualification and provide thorough final-stage checks, reviewing spelling, punctuation and grammar, as well as formatting inconsistencies and minor layout issues. Proofs are returned as annotated PDFs with clear, precise markup.

Project management

From initial concept to final files, I manage every stage of a project with care and a high level of organisation. This includes overseeing schedules and budgets, coordinating with contributors, reviewing proofs and plotters, and creating sales and marketing materials to support the final book.

Idea generation &
concept development

If you have the kernel of an idea but lack the time to develop it, I can guide it through a development process. I provide concept pitches, detailed page plans and sample text to bring your vision to life. With a keen attention to visual presentation, I carefully consider how layout, imagery and content can integrate successfully.

Fact checking

I research using trusted sources and reference books to provide thorough and careful fact-checking, supplying source lists and a markup for changes needed. I have worked extensively across natural history, science and space, but my experience is wide-ranging, including classical music, food and socio-political issues. See the ‘Books’ section for more information.

Image research & briefing

I create clear, detailed briefs to support layout design or artwork creation. I can take on the time-consuming task of sourcing and gathering image references to guide the illustration process.

Commissioning

I have extensive experience commissioning authors, illustrators and designers, including handling contract negotiations with agents, invoices and POs. I liaise with contributors, create briefs, manage delivery deadlines and review work at key stages for feedback.

Americanisation & Anglicisation

I Americanise text following the Chicago Manual of Style for spelling, punctuation, word usage and grammar. I can work directly into InDesign or provide a PDF markup.

Editorial services for authors

Whether you’re developing a picture book or a nonfiction title, I can help you refine your project through to polished, proofread draft fit for self-publishing or query letter.

My goal is to help you shape your manuscript with confidence. As well as assessing the key aspects of the text, I bring a strategic insight to your project, grounded in my experience as a commissioning editor – helping you to understand your book’s audience, genre and commercial positioning.

These are the main services I offer:

  • Positioning Review

A 500-word analysis of your book’s market position. This includes: intended audience, comparable titles, genre expectations (i.e. guidance on scope, illustrations, tone and length to strengthen its appeal and fit within its niche) and potential publishing routes (including publisher suggestions). Whether you're planning to submit to agents or publishers or pursue self-publishing, understanding how your book is positioned will help maximise its chances of success.
Think of it as a check of the map before a journey – knowing your destination and the landscape ahead.

    Price: £150

  • Editorial Assessment

A 1,000-word report of your synopsis and up to 2,500 words of text. This evaluates the effectiveness of your synopsis and assesses whether the writing is working as hard as it could. It covers: overall impression, strengths, areas for development, plot and structure, characterisation if relevant, voice and style.
If the positioning review is the map check, this stage gives you the actual map.

    Price: £300

  • Developmental Editing

This edit offers in-depth feedback on the ‘big picture’ elements of your manuscript. This stage focuses on refining ideas, shaping narrative structure, and addressing any major issues with plot / structure, pacing or character.
If the editorial assessment gives you the map, the developmental edit gives you turn-by-turn directions.

  • Proofreading

A thorough check at the final stage, usually just before publication, to ensure your manuscript is free from spelling, punctuation and grammar errors. It also picks up formatting inconsistencies and minor layout issues.
